Food Science & Technology Association of Thailand (FoSTAT)

The Industry in Thailand

Thailand has grown to become one of the world’s major food exporters. From a position thirty years ago where only the surplus was exporters, the food industry has grown to the point where many exports are processed, or have some form of value addition.  And the industry accounts for almost 20% of the nation’s total exports. This growth has resulted in the import of new technologies, the development of new products, the search for new markets and a new focus on quality. Concurrent with this has been the growth in food science and technology and an increasing emphasis on developing the human resources necessary to support the industry.

Thailand is a leading exporter of rice, canned fish, shrimp, Cassava, pineapples, poultry, sugar and squid, along with many other fruit and vegetables. At the height of this industry growth, the Food Science and Technology Association of Thailand (FoSTAT) was established in 1976 , primarily to pool the resources and exchange ideas between the private sector practitioners and the public sector researchers.
FoSTAT has since grown to over 914 members, Including 649 corporate members. The Association is very active in supporting Thai industry and in promoting international relations in the food sector. FoSTAT is a member of the Federation of Institutes of Food Science & Technology in ASEAN (FIFSTA), Allied Organization of Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) and International Union Food Science & Technology (IUFoST).

If you have an interest in food science and technology developments in the region or perhaps the wide range of both Thai food exports and imports, FoSTAT can be a useful initial point of contact for further information.
