|
The 8th SLACA (Simposio Latino Americana de Ciencia de Alimentos), 8 - 11 November, 2009 in Campinas Brazil was an important event for food science and technology this year. Under the Presidency of Dra. Glaucia Pastore (member of the IUFoST Governing Council) and Delia Rodriguez-Amaya (in charge of the SLACA Scientific Programme and Member of IAFoST Executive Council), over 1800 were brought together for the high-level scientific conference, featuring many outstanding speakers from around the world. IUFoST and IAFoST were well-represented and many opportunities were presented to discuss plans around ALACCTA (IUFoST Regional Group for Central and South America), Adhering Body activities in the coming year for SBCTA (Brazil), AATA (Argentina) and ACTA( Colombia), to name a few, and progress towards the 2012 IUFoST World Congress in Brazil. Besides the outstanding scientific programme an d useful meetings, it was a time to enjoy old and new friends as we shared the wonderful hospitality of the 8th SLACA organisers.

EFFoST Conference and IUFoST Governing Council Meeting, Budapest, Hungary |
|
The IUFoST Governing Council was invited to meet in Budapest, Hungary and to participate in the EFFoST (IUFoST Regional group for Europe) conference - New Challenges in Food Preservation. It was a pleasure to accept the invitation and to join in the programme that drew all Europe together and provided many insights into the challenges around food preservation. By any measure, it was another scientific success for EFFoST. Mo re about the November 2010 EFFoST conference in Ireland soon.

Dr. Diana Banati, Chair of the European Food Safety Authority and members of the Hungary Society for Food Industry - METE (IUFoST's Adhering Body in Hungary), welcomed the IUFoST Governing Council and hosted its meeting on the premises of the Central Food Research Institute in Budapest.
The Governing Council meeting covered many issues and challenges facing the global food science community and continued with its strategic planning and focus. IUFoST members will be hearing more about this in the next few weeks. We were glad to visit with Dr. Peter Biacs,( IUFoST President 1995-1999) and his wife Susan, as well as Dr. Joszef Farkas (IAFoST Fellow) who brought with him many pictorial memories of IUFoST over the years, stemming from the first meetings in the 1960s.
Our thanks to Dr. Brian McKenna, EFFoST President and everyone on the EFFoST organizing committee, and also to Dr. Diana Banati and our colleagues at METE for the warm welcome extended to the IUFoST Governing Council. |
